Book Review-Sir Cumference and the 100 Percent Goose Chase

Sir Cumference and the 100 Percent Goose Chase is a children’s story written by Cindy Neuschwander. It is part of a series, but it is not necessary to have read the previous books in order to enjoy this one.

Summary: When Lady Di of Ameter and Percilla Centwell travel to a nearby town to sell a flock of geese, not everything goes according to plan. Will they be able to make all of their customers happy when they arrive with less geese than originally promised?

My Thoughts: I liked this book. The writing is well-done, and I enjoyed the illustrations.

The author does a wonderful job of introducing the concept of calculating percent in a fun and engaging way. And, there are step-by-step easy instructions at the end as well.

I really appreciate stories that are interesting yet also provide a great learning opportunity, and this book definitely accomplishes both of those things!

I would like to thank Charlesbridge for providing me with a free digital copy of this book in exchange for my review. Thank you!

Book Review-How to Decorate a Christmas Tree

How to Decorate a Christmas Tree is a children’s book written by Vikki VanSickle and illustrated by Miki Sato.

This delightful book follows a girl and her family as they decorate their Christmas tree.

Each page shows a different step as the girl reminisces about special ornaments and memories.

In the end, the tree is decorated, and all that is left is for the family to enjoy their hard work.

My Thoughts: I enjoyed this book and think it would be the perfect read aloud to small children right before decorating their own Christmas trees.

The pictures are really wonderful as well. I love the collage-style art and beautiful color palette.

This is a great little book and would make an excellent addition to any Christmas book collection!

I would like to thank Penguin Random House Canada for providing me with a free digital copy of this book in exchange for my review.

Thank you!

Ally’s Angels October Challenge

It’s time for another challenge at Ally’s Angels!

Our theme for October is as always-Anything Goes.

For this month, I decided to make three cards using minimal supplies-featuring some more of my journaling cards.

Here are my cards:

Supplies: Journaling Cards: (Project Life); Die Cuts: Elle’s Studio; Pearly Gates Discs: Trinity Stamps; Foam Tape: 3M; Other: Striped Rainbow Journaling Card, Card Stock

I love how these turned out. They are simple but have some layers. And anything that puts a dent into my journaling card stash is a good thing! 🙂

Well, that’s it from me today.

I hope you enjoyed this card and are inspired to join us for this month’s challenge. You have until November 9th, so there’s plenty of time!

Aloha Friday October Challenge

I am back with a new design team project for the Aloha Friday Challenge!

For the month of October, our challenge was to create a card with the theme: Fall/Halloween.

I made two cards this month. One is for a pen pal, and the other for an upcoming birthday, but I used the same fall colors and products for both, so they are kind of a matching set.

Here are my cards:

Supplies (floral card): Dies: Elle’s Studio (rectangles), Spellbinders (flowers); Other: Card Stock
Supplies (truck): Dies: Keep It Simple (truck), Spellbinder (flowers), Lawn Fawn (letters); Stamp: Lawn Fawn; Other: Card Stock

I hope you enjoyed these cards, and we would love to have you join us at the Aloha Friday Challenge blog this month!

September Books

Today I am sharing the books I read in September.

Here are my reading goals for 2023:
1. Read 250 books. This includes the books I read to the kids, audiobooks, and anything I read for myself. 155 DONE
2. Read twelve (new to me) classics/award-winners. 4 DONE
3. Read twelve self-help/education books. 10 DONE
4. Re-read thirty books. There are so many good books I have been meaning to re-read, so this is my goal to help with that! 13 DONE

A few formatting notes:
1. I have inserted pictures as well as Amazon links to the books I enjoyed most for the month so that it is easier to read more about each book if you are interested. Hopefully, your local library system will carry most of these.
2. If I completed a more detailed review of any of these books, I included a review link after my comments.
3. If a book is not available yet, you will see the publication date in parenthesis after my comments.
4. I have rated each book using a bold numbered star after each comment.

The rating system is as follows:
*5-This book was so good, I either bought it, or think it is worth buying. I am pretty picky about the books I buy, so this is as good as it gets!
*4-This book was worth reading, but not necessarily worth buying-look for these books at your local library
*3-This book was just OK. I wouldn’t need to read it again.
*2-Don’t bother
*1-There probably won’t be any of these, because if it was THIS bad, I wouldn’t finish it. 🙂

Ooh….another really light reading month. I read a few books to the kids, and a couple of really good novels for myself, but that was about it.

Here is what I read in September:

1. Peanut Butter’s First Day of School by Terry Border-the kids really like this one *3
2. Arthur’s Back to School Day by Lillian Hoban-a classic for back to school *4
3. Look Out Kindergarten, Here I Come! by Nancy Carlson-still one of our favorites *4

4. What You Wish For by Katherine Center-this was a fantastic read. I loved it! *5
5. How to Walk Away by Katherine Center-another really good one! *4
6. Devil’s Food Cake Murder (Hannah Swenson #14) by Joanne Fluke-good *4
7. Elisabeth Elliot: Joyful Surrender by Janet Benge-very good *4
8. I Am Hungry by Michael Rosen-I did not understand this book *2
9. Miss Lady Bird’s Wildflowers by Kathi Appelt-pretty interesting *3
10. Rocks in His Head by Carol Otis Hurst-good! *4

This month I read four books to the kids, and I read/listened to three books just for me. I read three picture books to myself for review.

For the year, I have read forty-two books to the kids and seventy-nine books just for me. I’ve also read thirty-four picture books to myself for review.

That’s it for today. I will share my October books the first Tuesday in November!

Book Review-In A Cave

In a Cave is a children’s book written by Heather Ferranti Kinser and illustrated by Bonnie Kelso.

Summary: The story follows two children and their guide as they explore a cave and discover all it has to offer.

My Thoughts: I thought this book was very well done. The author does a fabulous job educating young readers on things you can find in caves and explaining what they are, along with the do’s and don’ts of exploring caves.

I enjoyed the rhyming text and illustrations, and think this book is not only a wonderful introduction to caves, but is sure to make more kids interested in exploring caves as well.

I would like to thank Gnome Road Publishing for providing me with a free digital copy of this book in exchange for my review. Thank you.

Please note: this book will be released on October 3, 2023.
